Carroll J. Dawson, 93, of Carthage, formerly of Hamilton, passed away at 6:04 P.M. Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Memorial Hospital in Carthage.
Carroll was born February 6, 1925, the son of Glenn and Ona (Mitchell) Dawson in Hamilton, Illinois. Carroll served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1943 until his Honorable Discharge in 1946. He was on Normandy Beach and also served in the Rhineland and Central European Campaign. He was a Purple Heart recipient and loved to show it to his friends. He also received three Bronze Battle Stars, WWII Victory Medal, Gen Hosp Distinguished Unit Badge and one Bronze Arrowhead. He enjoyed his work at the V.F.W. in Hamilton and was the last known Charter Member of Hancock County. On August 28th, 1948 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Symmonds. She survives. Carroll worked for Burlington Road Builders, Ideal Ready Mix and helped farm and drive trucks. He enjoyed tinkering around his shop, mowing his yard, and working word-find puzzles. He loved being around people and especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They would always bring a smile to his face. He was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church in Hamilton.
Carroll is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy; one daughter, Pat Land of Elvaston; two granddaughters, Tracy (Chet Edwards) Arnold of Hamilton and Jenny (Ryan Zettler) Land Elvaston; three great grandchildren, Chris (Abi Kraus) Arnold, Landan Arnold and Megann Manton; two great great granddaughters, Sawyer Kraus and one due in September.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ed and Bill Dawson; a grandson, Jeff and a great granddaughter, Makenna.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 17, 2018, at the Faith Assembly of God Church in Hamilton with burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton. Visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. until time of services at the church on Thursday. Memorials may be directed to Hickory Grove Apartments in Carthage.
