Gary Nelson Obituary

Gary E. Nelson (US Navy Veteran) passed away on Monday, February 18, 2019 surrounded by his family at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

He is survived by his sons and grandchildren: son David E. Nelson, son Scot A. Nelson (Laura Nelson); grandchildren, Wesley Nelson and Kelsey Nelson. Gary was born to parents Richard and Florine Nelson, on September 21, 1941 in Quincy, IL. Gary was the oldest of four brothers; Norman Nelson, Robbie Nelson (predeceased) and Doug Nelson. Gary graduated Bowen High School in 1959 and went on to Knox College, where after a year he felt the call to join the US Navy. Gary proudly served 4 years with distinction as a “Plank Owner” on the USS Enterprise CVN-65 (The Big E). After serving, Gary graduated from Quincy College where he met his former wife Rosalie E. Vicari. Gary retired from the Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago in 1996. In retirement he moved back to the Quincy, IL area where he pursued many activities, including researching family history and becoming a self-taught chef.

Memorial services will be held on the 14th of September at 10am at the Bowen Cemetery in Bowen, IL with military rites rendered by the Hancock County Honor Guard and U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Printy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
