Lewis Eugene “Gene” Thurman, 89, of Carthage passed away at 6:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at the Montebello Care Center in Hamilton, Illinois.
Gene was born October 14, 1928, the son of Arthur and Viva Thurman in Avon, Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1946 until his Honorable Discharge on July 3, 1948. On October 9, 1948, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Hardy in Bentley. In 1950 he called back into active duty in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War receiving his second Honorable Discharge in October of 1951. Gene was a life-long truck driver working for Bill Rampley, the Bentley Elevator for many years and then Jack Coeur. Gene was characterized by his smile and by living life to the fullest. He was a member of the Denver Christian Church and the V.F.W.
Gene is survived by his son, Don Thurman; a brother, Bud Thurman of Warsaw, Illinois; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Linda; two sisters, Arlene and Pauline; and two brothers, Truman and Johnny.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at the Denver Christian Church on Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Private burial will be in the Harmony Township Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Denver Christian Church LaMoine Christian Camp Fund or Alzheimer’s Research. Printy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
