Mary Elizabeth Matthews

Mary Elizabeth (Dalzell) Matthews, 70, of Carthage passed away at her home Thursday morning, April 25, 2019, surrounded by her family.

Mary was born August 6, 1948, the daughter of Galen Paul and Theda Mae (Zimmerman) Dalzell in Macomb, Illinois.  She attended Colchester High School graduating in 1966.  On June 29, 1968, she was united in marriage to Joe Edward Matthews in DeKalb, Illinois.  He preceded her in death 48 hours before on  April 23, 2019.  Mary had worked at Methode Electronics in Carthage for 20+ years retiring in 2009.  She was a longstanding member of the Stephen King Book Club and a contributing member of the American Humane Society.  She loved her dogs and enjoyed gardening and reading.  She was a dedicated fan of The Eagles.  Each year she looked forward to seeing her birdfeeders visited by her favorite birds, cardinals, and re-watching “Gone with the Wind”.  Her greatest joys were her grandsons whom she adored.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Holly Lea (Michael) Lee of Plymouth; three grandsons, Tucker, Spencer and Cooper Lee; one brother, Ronald Dalzell, along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; a brother, Donald Dalzell; and a sister, Judy Prosser.

Private family services will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to your favorite animal rescue in Mary’s name.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
