Robert D. Martin, 70, of Carthage, passed away at his home at 7:22 A.M. Monday morning, May 7, 2018.
Robert was born January 2, 1948, the son of Richard H. and Bonnie (Ketcham) Martin in Keokuk, Iowa. He graduated from Carthage High School in 1966 and went on to attend Western Illinois University. On May 20, 1969, he entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and two Bronze Stars. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1969. Robert had an engineering mind. He had farmed, was a motorcycle mechanic at his shop in Burnside and ran a bulldozer for several years. He owned and operated the Carthage Airport and was a commercial pilot. He was a pilot for Methode for many years and was an air ambulance pilot. He was also a flight instructor. He later owned Creative Woodworking and Porta Grace Carport construction in addition to his concrete business. Robert was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing and wintering in Texas.
Robert is survived by his significant other of fourteen years, Linda Bowen; her daughters, Wendy (Pete Jones) Davis and Toni Davis, both of Sheridan, Indiana; a brother, John Martin; one uncle, Richard Ketcham; one niece; one nephew; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday morning, May 12, 2018 at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage with burial to follow in Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until time of services at 11:00 at the funeral home. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
