Evelyn Atterberg Obituary Evelyn Louise Atterberg, 91, of Carthage, passed away in Keokuk, Iowa on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 11:45 p.m. Evelyn was born December 11, 1922, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Calvin and Nina (Haney) Hennings. She was united in marriage to U.S. Navy Officer, John Howard Atterberg, on September 15, 1942. He preceded her in death on July 2, 2001. After her marriage, Evelyn focused on raising her family stateside, while her husband was stationed in Guam during World War II. In 1952, the family moved to Carthage, Illinois, where Evelyn remained a loving homemaker. She was also the bookkeeper for the family business, Atterberg Electronics, which operated for 31 years. Evelyn was also a dedicated nurse's aide for Carthage Memorial Hospital for 21 years and often spoke of how much she cherished her work there. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and looked forward to services every week and visiting with her church family. Evelyn enjoyed various pets throughout the years, playing bingo, and listening to Johnny Cash, but above all, she loved spending time with her family. Evelyn was known by many for her caring smile and friendliness. She was a woman of strong faith, believing in the power and strength of Jesus Christ's love and the beauty and peace that would await her after her passing. Evelyn is survived by five children, Mary (Allen) Rapert of Gainsville, Texas, Phyllis David of Green Ridge, Missouri, John (Yudis) Atterberg of Keokuk, Iowa, Brenda Nelson of Sarasota, Florida, and Kathy (Andy) Chacon of Copper Canyon, Texas, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Florence Hennings and Winnie Cook of Fort Madison, Iowa, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; two sisters, Eva Hennings and Laura Carlson, and one brother, Calvin "Bud" Hennings. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage with burial to follow in the Keokuk National Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 P.M. Tuesday evening February 11 at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Carthage. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is charge of arrangements.
