Mary Phillips Obituary Mary E. Phillips, 92, of Montrose, Iowa, died at 5:50 PM Saturday, August 23, 2003, at Keokuk Area Hospital. She was born August 22, 1911, in Virginia, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Edward and Eva Lena McGovern Davis. She married Dallas Tone Phillips on December 11, 1936, in Ft. Madison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on September 10, 1979. She lived in Ft. Madison until moving to Montrose in 1936. Before marrying, she was employed at Sheaffer Pen in Ft. Madison. She later worked for the U.S. Postal Service and retired as Montrose Postmaster. She was a member of Montrose United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served as treasurer for many years. She was a member of Martha Chapter #5, Order of the Eastern Star in Montrose for over 50 years and was a past officer and secretary. She was a member of the Garden Club and volunteered at the Bloodmobile. She crocheted many gifts and items for her church bazaar. She is survived by a son, Richard "Dick" Phillips and his wife, Cecelia, of Kirksville, Missouri; two granddaughters, Teresa Phillips of St. Louis, Missouri and Rochelle Martens and her husband, Tom, of Kirksville, Missouri; a great granddaughter, Shelbie Baumgartner of Kirksville, Missouri; two step great grandchildren, Kevin & Kelby Martens of Kirksville, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Carl and Harry Davis; and a sister, Gladys Nuebel. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 27, 2003, at Montrose United Methodist Church with Rev. Elliott George officiating. Burial was in Montrose Cemetery following the services. An Eastern Star Memorial Service was held at 10:00 AM Wednesday immediately prior to the funeral service. Memorials may be made to Montrose United Methodist Church or American Heart Association.
