Barbara Clem Obituary Barbara Kay Clem, 74, of Burlington, Iowa, formerly of Bowen, IL and Mediapolis, IA, passed away Monday, February 28, 2022, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. Barbara was born July 25, 1947, the daughter of Maurice and Marjorie (Pierce) Crossland in Quincy, Illinois. She graduated from Bowen High School and went on to attain her B.A. from Western Illinois University. On November 4, 1967, she was united in marriage to Michael W. Clem at the Bowen United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2016. Barbara began her teaching career at the Bowen Junior High School in 1970, and later at Burlington Notre Dame. She was currently an academic advisor for Carl Sandburg College in Carthage, a position she held for fourteen years. While at home raising children, Barbara was a La Leche League leader where she formed many lifelong friendships and said these were the best years of her life. Barbara was an active member of the Zion United Church of Christ Church in Burlington serving in many capacities and positions, including the social justice committee, food pantry, choir and handbells and serving as a lay speaker. She was passionate about music, her artwork and actively working to make the world a better place. Barbara is survived by four children, Eric (Rachel) Clem of Maysville, Iowa, Dr. Nathan (Courtney) Clem of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Dr. Amy (Daniel Beetner) Clem of Burlington, Iowa, and Michelle (Songkane) Keokham of Springfield, Illinois; grandchildren, Grace, Wyatt and Eleanor Clem, Hadley and Tatum Clem, Michael "Mica" Beetner and Ryan Keokham; siblings, Kenny (Carla) Crossland of Bowen, IL, Neil (Karen) Crossland of Fairfield, Iowa, Marjorie Cheesman of Republic, Missouri and Maynard (Gail) Crossland of Lexington, Kentucky; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Michael in 2016; her stepmother, Maxine Crossland; and a half sister, Melissa Crossland in infancy. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the Zion United Church of Christ in Burlington. Family will meet friends from 5:00 PM 7:00 PM Friday evening at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Memorials may be directed to the Zion United Church of Christ Food Pantry or the Zion United Church of Christ Bridging the Gap program. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
