Charles Bailey Obituary Charles Leroy Bailey, 95, of Keokuk, passed away on June 10, 2015, at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk. Charles was born on April 17, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, to Albert Johnson, and was adopted by Charles Ward and Helen Youngberg Bailey. He was united in marriage to Caroline Ellen Moyers on July 20, 1947, in Burlington. She preceded him in death on September 3, 2013. A life-long resident of Keokuk, Charles was a member of First Lutheran Church of Keokuk and was employed as a switchman at the railroad yard for Burlington Northern Railroad for forty years. Charles was heavily involved in his church, serving on the church council as building chairman for twelve years, and in other roles as well. He spent thirty years with the Boy Scouts, working with the Cub Pack Committee Pack 69 and Troop 69. During 15 years as Scoutmaster, he obtained the Award of Merit and became a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. Charles proudly served in World War II as an Army engineer, and was honorably discharged. Charles is survived by two sons: Charles Edward (Sue) Bailey of Denton, Texas, and Roger L. Bailey of Keokuk; his daughter Ethel Annalee Tyler of Sun, Louisiana; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Caroline, and a daughter, Ruth Ellen. A Celebration of his Life will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, June 18, 2015, at First Lutheran Church in Keokuk, with Reverend Rodney Underwood officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Keokuk. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 17, with family meeting friends from 4 to 7 PM at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Centers at 917 Blondeau Street.
