Clara Smith Obituary Clara Louise Smith, 86, long time resident of Montrose, died at 12:33 AM Friday, February 18, 2011, at Keokuk Area Hospital in Keokuk. She was born June 17, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Frank and Edith Knight Johnson. Clara married Raymond N. Smith, Jr., on April 28, 1947 in St. Louis. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1992. She worked for Singer Sewing Center as a clerk and sewing teacher until she retired in 1986. Clara was a very talented seamstress and particularly enjoyed knitting sweaters for her family. She was a member of Church of God -Anderson in St. Louis, Missouri and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose. For thirty years every month she showed slides of her family's travels to the residents at the Montrose Health Center. Clara is survived by her two daughters, Sandy Storment and her husband, Dick, of Choteau, Montana and Cathye Wehr of Walsh, Colorado; two grandchildren, 'Chelle Peterson of Scappoose, Oregon, and Erik Peterson and his wife Bobby of Ft. Carson, Colorado; four great grandchildren, Autumn, Austin, Devin, and Cody; a brother, Grover Johnson of Collinsville, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Marilynn Smith of Monticello, Iowa and Irene Smith of Montrose, Iowa; six nieces, Dona Hallinan, Peggy Jordan, JoAnn Johnson, Karen McGraw, Susan Johnson, and Cindy Smith; and one nephew, David Shafer. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Cassel and Warren Johnson; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, February 25, 2011, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Montrose, Iowa with Rev. Goldie Laymon officiating. Inurnment will follow in Keokuk National Cemetery in Keokuk. There will be no visitation. DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center of Keokuk is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church of Montrose, Iowa, Lee County Conservation, or a charity of your choice.
