Donald VanDever Obituary Donald "Bruce" VanDever, 74, of Keokuk, died at 7:45 PM Friday, November 11, 2011, at his home. Bruce was born May 17, 1937, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Orville and Lulu Shaffer VanDever. He married Carole Jean Walker on August 18, 1957. She preceded him in death on February 7, 1984. He married Janet Peterson Donahue on August 12, 2006, in Keokuk. She survives. He lived in Keokuk most of his life except for four years while teaching in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Parsons College and his Masters Degree from University of Montana. He was a teacher and coach for Keokuk Community Schools 31 years, retiring in 1994. He was named 1984 Iowa All Star Coach and received Twenty Year Coach's Award, 1987 Basketball Coaching Award, and a Golf Bronze Award. He was a player, coach and supporter for 41 years. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. An avid golfer and fisherman, he was a member of Keokuk Yacht Club; Deer Run Golf Course; and the Warsaw Gun Club where he founded Coach's Kids to help kids in need. His family was very important to him, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Janet, of Keokuk; three children, Lisa Twitchell and her husband Terry of Keokuk, Lynn Day and her husband Terry of Quincy, Illinois, and Steve VanDever of Minneapolis, Minnesota; three stepchildren, Jerry Donahue of Omaha, Nebraska, John Donahue and his wife Terri of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Jan Doiel and her husband Mike of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Jason Twitchell, Jordan Fuller, Haley Fuller, Matthew Schwiete, James Day, Stacy Donahue, Jessica Donahue, Matthew Donahue, Nicholas (Jennifer) Donahue, Kelly (Chelsey) Donahue, Regan Doiel and Cailin Doiel; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces, Linda (Ed) Courtney and Darla (John) Graham. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Carole, a brother Keith VanDever and a sister Doris Washburn. Following cremation, a celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, November 16, 2011, at Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor John Raab officiating. Inurnment will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk. Visitation will be after 3:00 PM Tuesday November 15, 2011, at DeJong-Greaves Celebration of Life Center located at 917 Blondeau Street, with family meeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00. Memorials are suggested to Coach's Kids Holiday Fund or Trinity United Methodist Church.
