Ellen Young Obituary Ellen Marie Young, 82, passed away on March 2, 2017 at Meadow Brook Manor in Naperville, IL. Ellen, 82, formerly from Hancock County, IL was born February 9, 1935 in Gumbo, MO to Henry and Rose Krug Thalmann. Ellen married her high school sweetheart, John Robert "Bob" Young on August 12, 1956 in the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw. He preceded her in death.
Ellen was a 1953 graduate of Warsaw High School. She received her teaching degree from Western Illinois University and later completed her Bachelors of Science Degree from Iowa Wesleyan University. Ellen was an elementary teacher at various Hancock County schools and retired from Hamilton Elementary in 1994. For many years, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Warsaw. She was also a founding member of the Hancock County Republican Women's Club. She was a political news junkie and loved to discuss politics with anyone brave enough to debate her.
Ellen was the consummate teacher. While she taught hundreds of students how to read, write, calculate, and critically think, her family is grateful for the many important life lessons she imparted to them. She modeled to her children the importance of spending time with family creating memories. She taught them that life is too short to balance a check book, but there's always time to do your hair and makeup before going out in public. Always stand up for yourself and others. Appreciate the good times and deal with the bad through faith and family. A life lived in service to others is a life well-lived. That "this is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." And her quintessential lesson: No matter what problem you face, "it could always be worse."
Ellen is survived by four children, Suzanne Elting (Ted) of Keokuk, IA; Betsy Lieb (Frank) of Lombard, IL; John Young (Amy) of Greenwood, SC; and Sarah Bird (Dan) of Illinois City, IL; seven grandchildren, Danielle Vogel of Keokuk, IA; Annie Phillips (Truman) of Warsaw, IL; Meagan Vogel of Ft. Madison, IA; Elisa Lieb of Hoffman Estates, IL; Sarah Lieb of Lombard, IL; and Jackson and Thomas Bird of Illinois City, IL; three great-grandchildren, Emma and Drew Phillips of Warsaw, IL and Molly Owens of Keokuk, IA; two sisters, Dorothy Warning of LaGrange, MO and Virginia Gorby, of West Dundee, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob and two sisters, Rose Gullion and Irene Solter.
