Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gary Dennis Smith, a father, grandfather, and friend, who left us on September 8, 2026. Born on February 4, 1951, in Quincy, Illinois, Gary was the cherished son of Gilbert and Berneita Smith, who have preceded him in death.

Gary’s life was a testament to hard work, dedication, and an enduring passion for the simple joys that life has to offer. He was a proud graduate of Quincy Senior High School, class of 1969, and attended Bryant and Stratton College in Chicago, IL. Soon after, he answered the call to serve his country. Gary's commitment to duty and his nation was evident through his service in the Army National Reserve from 1971 to 1977, where he developed lifelong friendships and a steadfast sense of camaraderie.

Gary spent his career working at numerous auto body and paint shops in Quincy and later in Springfield, MO.

Gary found immense joy in playing pool and embarking on fishing trips with his son, Cory. These shared moments were filled with laughter, and they left a lasting imprint on those who shared his passion. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles in his younger years and quite frequently you could find him on the golf course. Gary also had a gifted hand for tinkering on and painting cars, a skill that spoke to his creativity and meticulous nature.

Survivors include his daughter, Shawna (Donnie Shepard) and his son, Cory Smith. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Shay and Lincoln Gerding.

In memory of Gary, those who wish to honor his legacy are encouraged to make a donation to Shay and Lincoln's educational fund in care of Shawna. This gesture will continue Gary's tradition of kindness and generosity, reflecting the values he held dear.

Though Gary's physical presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. May his memory be a guiding light, and may his stories be shared with warmth and fondness for generations to come.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, IL, followed by military honors immediately after the service. Visitation will be held from 9:30 until the time of the service.
