Henry Wenzel, Jr Obituary Henry John (Bud) Wenzel, Jr. of Warsaw, IL passed away on Sunday evening, June 26, 2016 at Parkway Senior Living in Blue Springs, MO, at the age of 92. Henry was born on College Hill in Warsaw, IL on May 24, 1924, to Henry A. and Mary Wenzel. Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in 2001, sisters Rita Wenzel and Kathryn Haas, and brother Joseph Wenzel. He is survived by four children: Jim (wife Judy), Summersville, MO, Judy (husband Van), Warrensburg, MO; Jeff (wife Chris), Lyons, CO; and Joan (husband Steve), Metamora, IL; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; Sisters: Bernice Smith of Burlington, IA and Annamae Gibson of South Pittsburg, TN, and many nieces and nephews. Henry was of Catholic faith and very active in his church in Warsaw. Henry married Ruth E. Bakula of North Buena Vista, IA in 1947. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June, 1997 at the Community Center in Warsaw, IL, with many friends and family attending. On May 28, 1942, Henry received his high school diploma, along with 28 other graduates, representing Warsaw's first wartime graduating class. In 1945. Cpl. Henry Wenzel, 20, served in Italy with the 15th Air Force Group, a B-24 Liberator Bomb Group. Here, he earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with a battle star for the Rome-Arno operations as a communications technician. He was honored with the Emeritus Service Certificate from the U.S. Army Air Force. While in Italy, he was able to visit Rome and see St. Peters, Pope Pius XII, the Coliseum, Catacombs and many other sights. Henry liked to tell the story about having to start a jeep that stalled on a busy B-24 taxi strip, causing a near miss with disaster by having it restart for no apparent reason! Henry retired from Keokuk Steel Casting in 1987 after 34 years. He was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a 4th Degree member of Bishop William A. O'Connor Council of Quincy, IL. He was one of the KC volunteers that helped build the KC Hall/Apartments in Warsaw. He was a member of Warsaw's American Legion, and served as one of the first members of Warsaw's ambulance crew, civil defense and auxiliary police. He was awarded a Service Recognition Certificate from the State of Illinois. Henry's hobbies, as his father before him, included a passion for gardening, winemaking and mushroom hunting. His abundant crops of fruits and vegetables were enjoyed by family and friends alike. Harvests of sweet corn, strawberries, blackberries and raspberries drew loyal customers year after year. His historic property, on the College Hill bluff overlooking the Mississippi river, encompassed 12 acres and commanded a view of Warsaw in one direction and the states of Missouri and Iowa from another. A heart attack and triple-bypass survivor at age 63, Henry walked two miles every day to recover and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Living past 90 years old, he will remain an example of health and fitness to family and friends. In February of 2014, he suffered a brain injury when he fell down a flight of stairs. He was never able to return to living independently. He first resided in a care center near daughter, Joan, in Washington, IL. Since February of 2015, he resided in a care center in Warrensburg, MO, near his daughter, Judy, the remainder of his life. Visitation will be held at Printy Funeral Home in Warsaw, IL on Friday, July 8, 2016, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:45 P.M. Funeral service: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Warsaw, Saturday, July 9, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be directly after at Oakland Cemetery in Warsaw with military rites.
