James Ufkes Obituary James Paul "Jim" Ufkes, 73, of Carthage, passed away Saturday evening, September 23, 2017, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy. Jim was born November 6, 1943, the son of John G. and Mildred (Aden) Ufkes in Carthage, Illinois. After graduating from Carthage College, Jim served in the U.S. Army where he saw heavy combat as a Vietnam Veteran. He later guarded the Czechoslovakian border where he had the opportunity to spend time with Shirley Temple Black. On April 24, 1982, he was united in marriage to Lori Lencioni Soderstrom. Jim farmed and was the bus mechanic and driver for the Carthage School district until his retirement in 2002. Previously, he had been a Union Operator for the Operating Engineers. Jim enjoyed attending auctions, talking and telling stories and taking care of his animals. Jim never knew a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in anyway. Jim is survived by his wife, Lori Ufkes, of Carthage; three children, Jeremy (Teresa) Ufkes of Carthage, Molly (Zaza) Tugushi of Columbia, Missouri and J. Chase (Rachel) Ufkes of High Ridge, Missouri; four grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jenna Ufkes and Lucca and Emma Tugushi; and one sister, Carol Bersani of Tallmadge, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage with burial to follow in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. Friday at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage. Memorials may be directed to the Quincy Humane Society or the Hearts of Hancock. Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
