Leona Johnson Obituary Leona Margaret Johnson "Margaret", age 83, passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Hospice House under the palliative care of Hospice Savannah. Margaret was born on February 20, 1934, in Kansas City, MO, the first child of Harold Thomas and Lucille Eleanor Clinton Kerr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister Beverly Annette Jeffrey of Salt Lake City, UT, and her brother David Anthony Kerr of Davenport, IA. She is survived by one sister, Mary Louise Jensen of Middletown, IA, daughter Jocelyn Jo Johnson-Hopper and son-in-law Michael Lee Hopper of Savannah, GA, son Jon Eric Johnson of Nauvoo, IL, and granddaughter Alicia Shea LeVesque of Nauvoo, IL. After suffering a stroke in September of 2015, Margaret was moved to Savannah, GA, to be closer to Jocelyn and Michael, but the majority of her adult life was lived in her beloved Nauvoo, IL. Upon graduation from Gorin High School in Gorin, MO, she held secretarial positions at both W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company and Union Electric in Ft. Madison, IA, for 8 years. She became a full-time Mom after Jocelyn and Eric were born. When they reached adolescence, she re-entered the workforce as a secretary with a penchant for proper English and perfect spelling. Margaret was employed with the Iowa Department of Human Services in Keokuk, IA, for 20 years prior to her retirement in 1999. While there she developed meaningful friendships which she cherished for the rest of her life. Margaret shared her family's fascination with antiquing; enjoyed going out to eat with friends, was active in the Nauvoo Hobby Club and water aerobics, and was drawn to yard sales like a moth to flame (much to the chagrin of her children). She shared her faith in God with her church family at First Presbyterian in Nauvoo where she proudly attended for over 48 years. Margaret was known for her dry wit and her ability to maintain a calm demeanor in nearly every situation. In the midst of a raging debate, the passively disinterested Margaret would occasionally throw out an unexpected zinger, diffusing tension and leaving everyone in stitches. Those with stories or memories to share are encouraged to gather at First Presbyterian Church in Nauvoo, Illinois, on Saturday, April 28, 2018, from 9:00 to 10:30 am for a Celebration of Life / Visitation with family. A memorial service will begin at 10:30 am, with burial to follow at Nauvoo City Cemetery in Nauvoo.
