Philip Kay Weiny passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, after succumbing to an infection. He was nearly 91 years old. Phil was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marva (La Bonte) Weiny, with whom he shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and adventure.

Phil is survived by his son Ira, daughter-in-law Lorrie, as well as nieces, nephews, and an extended family who will remember him with deep affection and love.

Phil was born in Keokuk, Iowa, to George and Vivan Weiny. He was almost seven years old when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Over the course of his long life, Phil witnessed extraordinary changes in the world—from radios in his childhood to smart phones in his final years. He embraced these changes with curiosity and enthusiasm, believing strongly in the power of learning and progress. One of Phil's proudest accomplishments was recognizing early on the importance of computers in education. During his more than 30-year career as a teacher, he was instrumental in establishing computer use and keyboarding instruction in the school where he taught, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students including his son Ira.

Athletics played a defining role throughout Phil's life. From a young age he was a dedicated swimmer. He took great pride in having swum across the Mississippi River on multiple occasions. In high school he played football and boxed. He competed in the Golden Gloves for several years. His love of sports earned him a scholarship to Florida State University, where he competed as a diver on the swimming team and became a lifelong, devoted Florida State fan. While attending Florida State, Phil joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve. After school he attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

Later in life, Phil was an avid runner, proudly completing the Boston Marathon. He remained deeply involved in swimming as a coach and official. He taught physical education, actively participated in his Corvair Club, and achieved the 33rd Degree in the Scottish Rite, accomplishments that reflected both his discipline and wide-ranging interests.

Above all, Phil cherished time with his family. He especially loved traveling across the United States with Marva and their son Ira, creating memories that will be treasured for generations. On one such trip Phil helped Marva's dad on her family farm after a tornado had damaged multiple buildings. Phil made a comment that he would like to buy the farm someday. A few years later a call came asking "do you want to buy a farm"? Phil and Marva scrambled to get the money together. Phil was proud to have partnered in farming with Darrel Althide for many years.

Philip Weiny will be remembered for his intellect, discipline, dedication to education, love of sport, and his ability to adapt and thrive through nearly a century of change. His life was one of purpose, curiosity, and quiet pride. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Warsaw Brewery in Warsaw Illinois on May 30th 2026 from 11am to 2pm.
