Velva Schmitt Obituary Velva Marlene Schmitt, 62, of Des Moines, died early Saturday, April 11, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Schmitt was born July 19, 1946 in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Virgil A. and Velva M. LeMaster Johnson. She married James L. Irvin Jr. and then Carl Schmitt in 1976. He preceded her in death on February 25, 2009. She lived in Burlington, Iowa, before moving to Des Moines, Iowa, seven years ago. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Keokuk, Iowa. He is survived by her mother, Velva Johnson Three children, Patsy Brewer and her husband Rick of Des Moines, Iowa; Merle Irvin of Des Moines, Iowa; Darrell Irvin of Des Moines, Iowa One stepdaughter, Carol Vinson of Keokuk, Iowa One stepson, Jason Schmitt and his wife Caroline of Keokuk, Iowa; Two grandchildren, Katrina Irvin and Gabriella Brewer; Step grandchildren, Danielle & Nathan Vinson; Matt, Jacob, Joshua & Allison Schmitt; Two great grandchildren, Brionna Dent and Chloe Vinson. She was preceded in death by her father, husband, and one brother, Gene Johnson. Funeral services were Saturday, April 18, 2009 at DeJong's Funeral Home with Rev. William Mitchell officiating. A private inurnment will be in Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be made in memory of Marlene.
