Janet Nicholas Obituary

Janet Nicholas, 78, of Carthage, passed away at her home Thursday, September 17, 2020 in Carthage.  

Janet was born December 28, 1941, the daughter of Robert and Rosalind Nicholas.  She graduated from Carthage Community High School in 1960 and then attended Carthage College.  She worked at the Carthage Public Library from 1958-1960 while in High School.  She again worked at the Carthage Public Library beginning in 1972 and served as director from July 1973-Dec. 1976.  Beginning in 1977 she attended the Leeds Polytechnic School of Librarianship in England, where she received her Master's Degree in Library Science.  She then served as the librarian at the correctional facility in Mt. Sterling for several years.  She worked part time at the Carthage Public Library District from 2005 until her death.

She was President of the Friends of the Carthage Public Library.  Janet was an active member of P.E.O. Chapter J in Carthage, Illinois, since 1972.  Over the years, she served as president, vice president, recording secretary, corresponding secretary, chaplain, and guard of Chapter J.  Janet served as president of the area Roundtable.  She worked on planning groups for Illinois conventions and was a delegate at State and International Conventions. She served on the Illinois P.E.O. Home Fund Board 2015-2018 and was chairman 2018.  Janet had a love for P.E.O.-supported Cottey College and regularly attended Cottey Vacation College for adults since 2013.  She was currently enjoying a virtual book club with friends from Cottey.  Janet will be deeply missed by her sorority sisters.   She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Warsaw and served as organist.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents.

 

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 3, 2020, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Warsaw.  Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until time of services at the church.  Memorials may be directed to the Carthage Public Library, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or a cat shelter of the donor’s choice.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
