Joe Matthews Obituary

Joe Edward Matthews, 75, of Carthage, passed away peacefully at his home at 8:05 A.M. Tuesday, April 23, 2019.

Joe was born July 24, 1943, in Tennessee, Illinois, the son of Herbert Charles and Hazel Lucille (Schaufele) Matthews.  He attended LaHarpe High School graduating in 1960.    After graduation he served in the United States Air Force from 1961 until his Honorable Discharge in 1965.  Joe enjoyed professional stock car racing for many years driving as #31.  He was also a member of the NRA and especially enjoyed his time at the Hancock County Gun Club where he was an active member and had served in many offices.  Joe had worked at the Bentley Elevator for many years.

Joe is survived by his wife, Mary, of Carthage; two daughters, Holly (Michael) Lee of Plymouth and Cheryl Campbell of Blandinsville; grandchildren, Tucker, Spencer and Cooper Lee, Christy Ray, Kelsey (Michael) Bible and Benjamin Campbell; great grandchildren, Graiclyn and Warren Ray, Hunter, Emma and Kinslee Bible and Alan Campbell; and two brothers, Jack (Karen) Matthews and John (Penny) Swanson both of Colchester.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Douglas Edward Matthews in infancy.

 

Private family services will be held at a later date.  Memorials may be made to the Hancock County Gun Club.  Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.
