Marlys Jean Lawson of Fort Collins, Colorado, formerly of Carthage, Illinois passed away peacefully at home with her son Vince at her side on January 14, 2022.
Marlys was born on August 30, 1935 in Hamilton, Illinois to James and Pauline (Gibson) Metternich. Marlys was married to Delbert Wayne Lawson on August 15, 1954 at the Methodist Church in Carthage.
During her lifetime Marlys was a florist at Holt’s Garden Center in Carthage, Lavender Lane in Windsor, Colorado and Safeway as the Flora Department manager in Ft. Collins. She also worked at Memorial Hospital in Carthage for 15 years. After retiring from Safeway she worked part-time at Pet Smart.
For over thirty years Marlys was a Girl Scout. She served as a leader, a council representative and member of the Girl Scout National Committee. While living in Limassol, Cyprus she assisted the Cub and Boy Scout troupes which her son Spencer was a member of. She enjoyed family genealogy and traveling. In Carthage she was a charter member of the Clipperettes auxiliary Fire Department.
Marlys is survived by her three children: Lea (Greg) Griffiths of Port Byron, Illinois, Vince (Michele) Lawson of Concord, California and Spencer (Nicole) Corbin Lawson of Portland, Oregon. Grandchildren: Drew Griffiths of LeClaire, Iowa, Callie Griffiths of Bettendorf, Iowa, Connor Lawson, Kaitlin Smith and Kyle Smith of Concord, California. She is also survived by her brother, Jim Metternich of Hamilton, Illinois.
A graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 2, 2022, at Moss Ridge Cemetery in Carthage.
