Martha Arline (Huls) Shay

Martha Arline (Huls) Shay, 86, of Carthage, passed away at Hickory Grove in Carthage at 8:15 pm on Thursday, May 19, 2022.

Martha was born on January 28, 1936, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob and Hilda (Sartorius) Huls. Martha was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church south of Carthage. She received her nursing degree from Blessing School of Nursing in 1956. In 1957, she married Donald Shay and they moved to Louisville, Kentucky. They later divorced. Martha was a dedicated worker at the Veteran’s Hospital in Louisville for thirty-five years.

Martha is survived by five sisters: Alice Varner, Esther Huls and Janet Hoffman, all of Carthage, Illinois, Dixie (Ed) Schneider of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and Mary (Don) Lisenbee of Allen, Texas; one brother Lloyd (Colleen) Huls of Carthage, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents; her brother Harold (Ina) Huls; three sisters: Gladys Rhodes, Fern (David) Grace and Susan (Gary) Tenhouse; and a special friend of twenty-five years, Ralph Schooler. 

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at Immanuel Lutheran Church south of Carthage. Burial will follow at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 10 to 11 pm directly before the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to HUGS of Hancock County.
